Heavily armed Taliban militants stormed a top Kabul hotel, sparking a ferocious battle involving Afghan commandos and a Nato helicopter gunship that left at least 21 dead including the nine attackers.

The president prefers to keep the focus on the sampling of 10 letters a day that he reads from among the tens of thousands that ordinary people send to the White House. In many cases, he writes back to these people, with his own signature.

But the president couldn't get around explaining how the Patriot Act got signed into law without briefly shining a spotlight on the autopen. Once that news was out, though, the White House clammed up. It declined to provide any further details about how many autopens the administration uses, what they look like, where they're kept, or who makes the machine.

Shark & Surfer

Ever caught a shark? Jacob Langston did last week. But he had no idea until he left the beach.

The Orlando Sentinel photographer was taking some video of a surfer off New Smyrna Beach in Florida when he heard another surfer scream, "Dude! Did you see that?"

Langston didn't. But his camera did: a four-foot spinner shark had just hurtled over an unwitting surfer.
Check it out, and notice the surfer's body language screaming, "Whoa."

In 1948, Guevara entered the University of Buenos Aires to study medicine. His "hunger to explore the world"[33] led him to intersperse his collegiate pursuits with two long introspective journeys that would fundamentally change the way he viewed himself and the contemporary economic conditions in Latin America. The first expedition in 1950 was a 4,500 kilometer (2,800 mi) solo trip through the rural provinces of northern Argentina on a bicycle on which he installed a small motor.[34] This was followed in 1951 by a nine month 8,000 kilometer (5,000 mi) continental motorcycle trek through most of South America. For the latter, he took a year off from studies to embark with his friend Alberto Granado, with the final goal of spending a few weeks volunteering at the San Pablo Leper colony in Peru, on the banks of the Amazon River.
